Miguel Powery

I have been painting, exhibiting and selling my art work for the past 18 years, but have been drawing since the age of 6. Although I have not received any formal training, I take my art very seriously and have worked under many different artists provided by Cayman National Foundation, the Visual Arts Society and the National Gallery. I have always practiced some form of art every day, particularly with jewellery-making and sculptures of Black Coral and precious metals. What inspires me is hearing my Father telling stories of those fishing trips he had to the Mosquito Kays just off the Central American Coast.
I love painting boats and the sea because there is so much movement and the colours and always changeing. Lately I have been painting our local tropical plants and foliage, especially our Silver Thatch Palm which I find challenging but rewarding. In 1995, along with three other artists, we formed a group called the Native Sons which has been instrumemtal in exposing other talented Caymanian artists and has had many exhibitions on the Island and abroad.
